A passage from After The Storm: A Study of the Decade After the CHRONOS Project.
This period, known as the Eusenian Era on Eunomia, saw more than its fair share of political upheaval. Some of it would spill over into violence.
After a short fight on the Eunomian moon of Carmentis, it is suspected that Visionary Despina was assassinated by a Champion not too long after the Prometheus station had fulfilled its function. The team of forensic scientists, who arrived at the scene less than 24 hours later, suggested in their official report that “there had been a few shots fired with firearms, followed by a small hand-to-hand scuffle.” Analysis of bruises on the resulting body demonstrated that Despina was outmatched in the struggle, but continued fighting until the very end.
It would not be until the years afterwards that Despina's vision of the new Eunomian caste system would come into being. It has long been a hotly debated topic among historians - not least due to the tangled mass of contradictory evidence - what her aims really were. Many think her ultimate goal was even more radical than documentation suggests. Nevertheless, the caste system would grow into a much more malleable, fragmented entity in the decades following. Gone were the days in which a Eunomian citizen would be born into an unmoving class; inter-caste marriages became far more common.
An excerpt from the screenplay of Dawn on the Horizon, a biopic about the last days of Visionary Despina, known to some as Failing Light.
EXT. EUNOMIAN MOON. NIGHT.
Silvery dust is blown across the surface of the moon by a soft breeze. Despina checks the tablet on her wrist and looks up. She wears a sleek spacesuit with small, boxy breathing apparatus attached to the collar.
The sound of FOOTSTEPS. Despina whips around and sees CHAMPION XARSA.
XARSA
I didn't think you'd actually come.
DESPINA
It's good manners to accept an invitation.
Despina smirks.
DESPINA (CONT'D)
So what are you here for?
XARSA
I heard about what you're trying to do. Do you realise you're tearing the fabric of Eunomia apart?
DESPINA
More like cutting off the rotten flesh.
Xarsa steps back, face stunned. She reaches for her WEAPON.
XARSA
Then you know what I'm here for.
DESPINA
Yes, I suppose I do.
Despina runs towards Xarsa, reaching for her own WEAPON. Xarsa gets the first shot off, disarming Despina; blood runs down the Visionary's hand.
DESPINA
Well played, Champion.
Cut to a view of the two combatants' SILHOUETTE, as the next shot hits Despina in the HEAD.
SMASH TO BLACK
–DECRYPTED–
I'm heading out to do some important work far away from here, in deep space.
There are still people who need to hear the good news. I can do so much out in the wilderness now I've been exiled from the Eunomian capital. This has only given me new energy to spread the word. The joy of fluidity - of no longer needing to live in a stagnant, frozen Eunomia - needs to be transmitted everywhere.
Just think - there are so many other potential versions of me alone.
Those of you who need to will know how to read this.
Please don't come and find me.
