Character Creation

Characters generated in CHRONOS have four major attributes:

  • a public bio - a short paragraph about your character which other players will see on the Characters list
  • a private bio - information about your character that you know but you don't want other players to know at game start. This can include anything from relatively innocuous backstory details to the darkest of dark secrets! Note that the GMs will be able to see and refer to this bio.
  • a set of skills - 8 at game start. In order to take some skills, you'll need to have others first. For more info on skills, and a list of which skills are available, check the related page.
  • a set of quirks and flaws - some extra features which often have an impact on the way you play the game.

For a guide to the basic structure of character sheets at game start, consult the Example Characters page.

Bios

Bios are essentially short passages detailing the basics of your character. The GMs would request that, while containing a decent amount of information, they're not pages and pages in length! Please also provide a name, age, and preferred pronouns for your character. Your pronouns IC (in-character) and OC (out-of-character) do not have to match, and nor does your age.

When generating your character, please keep in mind what you do or do not want other players of CHRONOS to know about your character at game start. Remember that anyone can access the Characters list at any time.

Please also refer to our Society-wide CAT (Content and Acceptable Themes) Policy with regard to what content and plot elements are (and are not) allowed in content generation. While CHRONOS is a game set in a universe devastated by war, please be sensitive to the rules and the needs of players around you. The GMs are more than happy to answer any queries.

Skills

Skills are, essentially, things that your character has the capacity to do at game start. Your character can, through using an action on a turnsheet, acquire new skills as the game progresses.

At game start, your character will be allowed 8 skills. If a skill on the list (see page here) is marked as Tier 2 or Tier 3, there are one or more prerequisite skills you need in order to take that skill. These prerequisite skills do count towards the 8 total.

Quirks

Quirks are specific advantages and disadvantages that your character has at game start. Quirks have positive or negative values, depending on how they are likely to impact a character's life in the world of CHRONOS. Quirks with negative values are sometimes called flaws. Quirks with 0 values sometimes exist, too: this means that, while taking the quirk may change a player's experience of the game, they don't have a quantifiable advantage or disadvantage.

The maximum value, in total, of positive and negative quirks is +2. You are allowed to take up to 5 positive and 3 negative quirks in total at game start.

In CHRONOS, quirks are divided up into Personal, Relationship and System categories. Broadly speaking, any player is allowed to take any Personal or Relationship quirk (see the corresponding page for exceptions). In the case of System quirks, please only take quirks or flaws that correspond with your character's home system (e.g. Kybele, Kedalion, Achelia etc).
