A Recent History of the Seven Systems

The Seven Systems have experienced conflict for as long as it’s possible to remember, and the past twenty years have been no exception to this. What has really made them exceptional is the extent to which the conflict was, in many cases, contained within individual systems. While there were some interplanetary conflicts, such as Kedalion’s involvement on Achelial, for the most part this period has been characterised by civil strife.

The Ananke Conference that happened in 1262 is generally considered a catalyst for much of the civil conflict, form the murder of Eunomia’s Princess Eusenia to the removal of the Briareon gerontocrats. While it is generally accepted that the tensions were brewing long before the disastrous conference, it is also seen as a useful point to being the period.

Timeline

While anyone wanting to really understand the period would do well to study each individual civilisation involved in the period, it can be useful to get an overview of events. The following is a timeline of key events in the history of the Seven Systems over the past two decades.

  • 1262.41 A scientist appears on the hastily abandoned Ananke station, claiming to have been abducted from the future and forced to run experiments. He sends out a distress call and is picked up by a passing vehicle.
  • 1262.43 The Eunomian government release an official statement in the wake of the Ananke conference, proclaiming it a disaster and condemning both the GSP and the concept of time travel.
    • The Eunomians make it clear that while they wish to continue engaging in diplomatic relations with the rest of the Systems, they refuse to do so under the auspices of an organisation as incomptent as the GSp. They officially withdraw from the Syndicate.
  • 1262.275 An opti called JUPITER is taken on board by OAS and NewYou cybernetics. JUPITER’s focus is apparently to develop new ways of integrating people with optis and other augmentations.
  • 1263 The Tungsten Roses lead a revolution against Klaycorp, with the support of Kedalion.

 * 1263 Briareos breaks out in revolution as tensions grow between the gerontocrats and the younger generations. Over time, the younger, ‘Dusk’ faction are forced onto the planet’s surface, while the older ’Dawn’ faction remain in the gasbags.

  • 1264.33 Princess Acantha of Eunomia attempts a coup against her father, Ordained Oresteus. A combination of foresight and competent generals means that the rebellion is very quickly put down.
    • However, in the wake of Eusenia’s murder many sympathise with Acantha’s cause. She deliberately allies herself with the hard determinist faction of the Visionaries, and forces the Ordained to make many concessions to them.
  • 1264.142 The Selasi government is discovered to have been supporting research into fungal bioweapons. Moral outcry causes all institutes to be closed and research destroyed.
    • Eunomia strongly condemn Selas and, even though the threat has effectively been neutralised, begin stockpiling weapons to counter the apparent threat.
  • 1263.288 The Kybele Blue Carnation faction offer unofficial support to the Tungsten Roses. The alliance becomes unofficially known at the ‘Floralliance’.
  • 1265.28 Ordained Oresteus retires and passes on the mantle of Ordainedship to Prince Ilias, with the support of the Council. Ilias makes it clear that he intends to continue his father’s peaceful policies, though maintains a hostile front towards Selas under pressure from the more aggressive factions on Eunomia.
  • 1265.224 - Kedalion attack Cheimeros as a strategic move, intending to annex it for resources. Communiques revealed by intelligence agents suggest another possible motivation for the invasion, possibly involving Selas, but it isn’t made clear.
    • Cheimeros fight back surprisingly hard - even without any real allies, they have the advantage of being on home territory and the innate Cheimeron stubbornness.
  • 1265.303 Klaycorp officially surrender to the Tungsten Roses and Kedalion.
  • 1266.237 The already strained diplomatic relations between Eunomia and Selas grow worse when Selasi Reunificationists blow up a government building. The Selasi government, bowing to increasing pressure, impose sanctions against Eunomia, tightening visa requirements and creating an air of hostility that causes many Eunomians remaining on the planet to leave.
  • 1267 The Briareon civil war is interrupted when a number of dead bodies start moving, spreading a plant-based plague of highly infectious walking corpses.
  • 1271 Kedalion calls in support from their factories on Achelia in the war against Cheimeros. Many people on Achelia register displeasure, but are unable to stop the factories being turned to martial purpose.
    • Some Achelians join the war effort - a notable majority of whom have accepted Kedalion Opti enhancements.
 * 1273 Selas discovered to be developing and stockpiling chemical weapons. Eunomia reach out to Kedalion for support against the amassed weapons.
    • Kedalion uses the areas of Cheimeron that are unofficially under their control to place weapons that can hit Selas from the shorter distance between the two planets.
    • Selas attempts to set up a blockade to prevent the weapons from arriving and being set up on the planet, leading to 13 days of tense negotiations before the Cheimerons, separately, bomb the facilities and reassert control.
  • 1275 Having no biological children, Ordained Ilias elevates Visionary Faustina to Guide caste with the support of the Visionary Council, officially adopting her as his daughter. It is assumed that Guide-Princess Faustina will become the next Ordained in due time.
  • 1277 In response to increasing Kedalion control, the Tungsten Roses rally again with Blue Carnation support to raid some Kedalion factories. The Floralliance acts as a guerilla group, damaging Kedalion interests on Achelia.
    • Commentators have noted that the Tungsten Roses have been careful to avoid outright declaring war on Kedalion, confining their acts of aggression to acts that could be considered domestic affairs.
  • 1278 The Eunomians send a conventional missile through space. The exact target is unknown - the sector of space it is expected to hit contains nothing but an abandoned space station.
