The Ananke Conference

The Ananke conference was meant to be a nine day conference dedicated to peace, as well as an opportunity for every planet to show off their native achievements. However, despite the optimistic vision presented, fate decreed that this was not to be. After heightening diplomatic tensions on the first few days of the conference, the comms went dark on the fifth day and, a scant three days later, the ship itself blew up.

Many people credit the Ananke conference, and subsequent explosion, with being the trigger point that started the War. Even those who primarily blame other diplomatic tensions cannot deny that the revelations made at the conference must have played a significant role in making the war happen then.

Among the many scientific marvels displayed at the conference was an experimental time travel device known as the Chronos Machine. While the Chronos Machine is, by all accounts, an actually functioning time machine, it has the flaw that it can only send people back to points in which a very specific set of conditions hold - notably, the conditions caused by a Chronos Machine being switched on.

The replica of the machine created in recent years appears to be able to send people back to any time that the previous iteration of the machine was switched on - notably, it appears to have been switched on every day of the conference.

The GSS Ananke

The GSS Ananke ship consists of nine main areas, one for each of the Seven Systems (containing both their respective exhibition space and accomodations), one for the GSP, and one as the common space for everyone (this is where the main hall and main conference room were located).

What we know about

Briareon Food Ultimatum

Using their position as the breadbasket of the system, Briareon delegates made an announcement on the second day of the conference regarding their plan to impose food trade sanctions on systems that may threaten the current state of peace. Despite the intention, this announcement heightened the tension between systems.

The Kedalion-Eunomian weapons deal

One of the events which led to the War was the Kedalion-Eunomian weapons deal. It was exposed by the Kybele journalist Jem. The details of the deal were never revealed to public due to the Kybele comms cut on day four, prior to the complete comms cut on the following day, but the deal's existence and the fact that it involved massive quantity of weapons being traded was enough to alarm all systems.

The Selasi bioweapon

There were rumours of a fungi-based Selasi bioweapon being smuggled onto the Ananke. The GSP were informed of this, which resulted in a full-scale search of the Selasi Petal. No trace of bioweapon was found. The Selasi delegates protested heavily at this act of mistrust, but the seeds of doubt were planted and it is difficult to tell how much this rumour affected the attitude of the Systems towards Selas in the aftermath.

The assassination of Princess Eusenia

Princess Eusenia, daughter of the ruler of Eunomia, was present on the Ananke as an ambassador of peace. However, on the fifth day of the conference, she was assassinated on live television shortly before all the comms died, the last thing heard on broadcast being panicked accusations thrown at an Achelian delegate by someone off screen. The assassin's identity was never confirmed, as Ananke was lost shortly afterwards. Eusenia's death was often considered to have been the trigger for Eunomia's declaration of war.

The CHRONOS team

Some scientists were on the ship, a fairly small team including Hesiod, Delilah and Hussein. They were giving us regular updates until comms cut. It appeared that all tests for the machine gave predicted results and the test runs were successful. The team attracted interest from different parties, including Kedalion corporations, the Kybele government and the Eunomian government, which was deemed to be positive until on day five they realised that a bidding war on the machine and technology behind it was happening without their knowledge. Their efforts to diffuse the situation were proven to be unsuccessful, considering the riot that ensued.
There were suspicions regarding if the Chronos machine was the cause of the eventual doom of Ananke, but no definite proof to such claims can be given.

A Day-By-Day Breakdown

The following is a report compiled by Mirza Ruan, summarising known events on each day of the conference.

Day 1

Guests from around the galaxy arrived, welcomed by the GSP organisation. Exhibitions were being set up. Everything was running according to plans.

Day 2

Leader of the Briareon delegates, Oscar Letts, made an ultimatum, demanding formal promises of peace from all systems, threatening food trade sanction. No immediate response from the other systems were recorded.

Day 3

The Chronos machine was turned on for its first demonstration on a central exhibition stage in the main area of the ship, kindling interest in several factions, especially in Kedalion and Kybele.

Despite everything was running as usual, a general sense of uneasiness was felt around the ship.

The Briareon ultimatum had led to many hushed discussions between and within factions.

In the Eunomian exhibition hall, Princess Eusenia got into a fierce public argument with an Achelian delegate regarding a new mining technology developed by Eunomia and the environmental impact of asteroid mining.

Day 4

At noon, Kybele journalist Jem sent out reports that expose the Kedalion-Eunomian weapons trade deal to Kybele and the whole galaxy. Despite eager inquiries made by a number of news outlets, no further reports were made. It was suspected that within an hours of Jem's first report, the Kybele onboard comms (and Jem's own comms) went down. The cause for this is unclear.

The report caused wide-scale panic. Speculations regarding the possible motivations and consequences of this coalition of Kedalion and Eunomia ran amok and systems such as Cheimeros and Selas felt especially threatened. The latter responded with immediately forming a mutual-defence pact with Kybele.

Later the same day, GSP received a report of Kybele claiming that a highly dangerous Selasi bioweapon was smuggled onboard. The GSP security made inquiries and a full-scale search of the Selasi petal was conducted to find the bioweapon. No bioweapon was discovered. It is uncertain if was a false alarm. The Selasi delegates made a formal protest against the GSP and the relation between the newly forged alliance between Selas and Kybele was tested.

Day 5

A bidding war for the Chronos machine ensued in the main hall of the ship. Scientists responsible for the development of Chronos, led by Hesiod, attempted to calm people down. They revealed that the machine was still in development stage and in no state for sale. Chaos ensued as the Achelian organisation, Tungsten Roses, suddenly hijacked the gathering and the onboard speaker system, blasting music and spraypainting slogans.

This quickly turned into a riot, which spilled out into the main conference room next door, in which Princess Eusenia was making a peace-talk that was broadcasted across the galaxy. At 18:40 station time, Eusenia was shot, someone off screen shouted accusations at an Achelian delegate. The whole room was plunged into chaos as the princess fell.

The comms went out at 18:42 station time. No further broadcasts were made from the ship, and comms arrays on the planets were unable to make any contact. Zidar arrays suggested that the ship was still extant, but the internal fate was unknown.

After several hours, the nearby planets of Achelia and Selas both sent out probe ships to attempt to establish what happened on the ship.

Day 6

No information could be gleaned from the ship - communications efforts registered that the ship was still present, but failed to make contact.

Day 7

No information could be gleaned from the ship - communications efforts registered that the ship was still present, but failed to make contact.

Day 8

No information could be gleaned from the ship. At 15:08 station time, the ship disappeared from communication
